Courses and horses

Courses and horses

There are several equestrian courses available today, short one day training courses to full-time qualifications recognized nationally.

If you have not attended such before, or if you've been learning over a long period, it may be difficult to know what is expected of you.

If the participant in a course of day, your best choice is to ring up to the institution at which it occurs and discover that implies the course. If there is no element of practice or yard work, it may be a good idea to wear jodhpurs or panties and boots yard or the pack at least your equipment for riding in the car so that you have it if necessary. Also, a block of paper and pens will be essential to take notes, but also a highlighter to make important statements stand out. You will also need lunch, but you can check if the food is provided when you ring and are intended to take a bottle of water and snacks to keep your concentration levels!

With distance education courses your riding equipment will be not much use for you, although you can expect to perform professional tasks of your own volition and present video evidence. Therefore, you will need again access to a hat, the jodhpurs, gloves and boots yard of good quality as the minimum personal protective equipment. In terms of equipment, you need to form an appropriate workspace at home where you can concentrate on the course material in reading without being bothered. Once more, you'll need for pens and highlighters to take notes and highlight points. A computer can also be a useful complement to your workspace to complete and store as well as for research assignments.

For full qualifications, it largely depends on course you as if you'll need of riding gear or not. Often at the level of diploma, you will need to only to use gear riding for limited practice sessions, and therefore you will not be a full dress, jodhpurs and riding jackets. However you can expect to have minimum forms of protection for the horse handling in educational sessions, such as a hat, gloves and boots of yard. Some degree courses provide practical skills and constituency as optional modules. On a professional training course, full riding gear is usually required, that there are assessed the constituency and practical elements. Then of course, you must have a smart pair of jodhpurs or breeches, leather long riding boots or boots and gaiters and a tidy riding jacket. A riding hat and gloves to go without saying!

Academic equipment required for a course time full is similar to others, laptop computer, obviously pens and paper. However you may also require a printer as much of your work will have to be physically delivered. It is important to disentangle the access to the library of your institution that it will be a vital resource for completing assignments and review. If you plan a residential student, you must make sure also you have access to housing, and that you have the means to pay for it. This can lead to request a student loan.

Your chosen educational institution give you much more detailed in their expectations, but these very basic pointers should give you something to think in terms of what riding gear and academic facilities you must be prepared. You'll find a commitment to long term, you will need to invest in some new riding gear to make sure it is correct, appropriate standard, and you will last for the length of the route. I hope that you will have to come ready to learn and take advantage of your courses!

Hostel of the jungle: only 25 kilometres from the Panama International Airport?

Hostel of the jungle: only 25 kilometres from the Panama International Airport?

My attention was diverted to eco-tourism to the hostel building. I think it is a progressive step, such as the construction of a hostel in the Valley would be the most appropriate first step in the creation of the exhibition of Kalu Yala.

Like most people, something new is exciting for me, although it is "to work", I was excited to be part of a new project. After a bit of research, I've been raised back to Earth, realizing that it would take "real work" to enter a market competitive and well defined.

I came to a standstill, after asking this question relevant oh-so, "what do we have that they do."-Please note that, for the purposes of this blog, I refer to youth hostels in wilderness areas, which most concerns my research is located in Central America. -Numerous activities offered to youth hostels are not beyond our grasp, but without these activities are already established in the Valley, the scope of such a project is numbing in mind.

A meeting with the man-boss, Jimmy, attenuated good number of my concerns. His confidence that the idea has done more for my morale than anything else. It is only when I finally left Hispania (our condo) to take the air that I had a moment of enlightenment. I continued to ask myself, "What do we have to offer in the Valley," where there is not is built, nothing except for wilderness and a declining dispersion of pasture herds? He hit me... What is not in the Valley is the same resource that will make possible, popular and potentially profitable Inn.

Unlike the majority of "adventure" or outdoors is based on activity hostels found throughout America Central, or better still the world, Kalu Yala has hundreds of acres of private land (with thousands of acres currently under option contracts). In addition, this acquired land adjoins the Chagres and other shrines of Government protected Park (the natural kind... not that of the clergy). Essentially, it gives us the unique opportunity to serve as an outpost of wild nature of sorts.

Then came the need almost-epiphany property: that we are not in the coordinated activities and structure is the very essence of what we can offer. The product we offer is the opportunity for camping, hiking or explore thousands of hectares of land Kalu Yala or national parks which share our borders. Once in the Valley of Kalu Yala, travellers can enjoy the amenities of a liveliness, the State-of-the-art hostel, ready to meet all the needs camping/hiking/Sports Horse/bike/Explorer, including tents, cooking equipment, safety equipmentetc.

Words like freedom, exploration, individuality... or even real adventure come to mind. These all seem to embody the ideals of the segment more hardcore of backpackers and the creation of a hostel which will serve as "the last outpost" for the more adventurous backpackers has obvious marketing qualities. I see now...

".. ."for those who seek the freedom to embark on a self-tailored adventure jungle, where opportunities are second only to the immensity of the forest..." - or something similar...-.

Thank you for fighting your way in this compilation of thoughts scattered reflection of a week of brainstorming (on the development of a hostel of Kalu Yala Valley). I'll be back soon to y ' All give a reduction more organized and specific on this business once I met more with my co-collaborators, John Cook and James Walsh, as well as other members of staff.

Photograph of the event, a licence to print money?

Event Photography, has License to Print Money?

"Event Photographers have a license to print money!"
If I had a pound for every time I've heard that said at an event, I'd be a rich man! Unfortunately, the statement just isn't true. Sure, some events can appear that way especially when you've a big crowd all waiting for your printer to spew out their favourite images. But what you need to remember is just what is involved in getting that image into the customer's hands.

A lot of the kit used varies depending on whether you are photographing equestrian events, dog agility shows, kart racing gold indoor charity events. However, we have to have the kit to cover any of these type of bookings - something that has to be reflected in the price we charge for our photos. Here's a rough breakdown of the costs that lay behind the price of a print, just to give an understanding of why they are the price they are.

Camera gear.
Clearly every photographer needs a camera and a lens. What most people don't made is that professionals need to carry spares of each, just in case of unforeseen circumstances. This, of course, double the unite on equipment. In my case I use Nikon Pro gear, which isn't cheap, but is incredibly reliable and gives excellent me image quality. As a ball-park figure, let's put a price of ?4500

Portable Studio Kit.
Depending on the type of event being covered, the photographer may need to use studio lighting and backdrops. Again, spares need to be carried just in case. A good set of studio lights can cost upwards of ?800, with backdrops being half that. We'll call it ?1200

Computer gear.
We need to be able to get the photograph in front of the customer as quickly as possible. For this, we generally use specialist software running on quite speedy computers. Personally, we use Apple iMac's as they have superb screens and are very compact, though they do come at a price! We also use wireless transmitters and receivers to speed things along. A single wireless transmitter is ?600, we need two of them. Lets add ?100 for the rest of the wireless networking gear (routers & cabling). Of course we also need some software to handle it all, so let's budget ?350. Total price for this lot - ?3150

Printers.
What's the good of taking photos if you can't print them for the customers? Therefore we need at least one printer. Of course, we carry two so that should one fail, we can carry on. We carry two different printer sizes - 9?6? and 12?8. Lets call it ?2200 for the printers.

Other stuff we need.
Marked - keeping the kit dry when we are covering out door events is essential. Our marquee cost ?800. Of course, we also need a generator - ?250, as well as tables and chairs for the staff ?250. That's another ?1300 gone.

Insurance.
I suspect that this is one area where people save. Well, the less reputable ones anyway. We are fully insured, for our kit, for public liability and for use ' s liability. Not much change from ?600 for that.

Credit card payment processing.
In this day and age, it is considered vital to be able to accept payment by card at events. Everyone expects to be able to pay that way but, of course, there's a cost involved to be considered. It costs about ?35 per month to rent the machine, plus the percentage taken by the card companies. For the purposes of this exercise, lets say the percentage adds up to another tenner, bringing the cost to ?45 per month - ?540 per annum.

Flight boxes and boxes.
All this expensive kit needs to be transported safely. A custom flight case for the printers was ?400 more ?200 for one for the iMac. We've also probably spent another couple of hundred on various boxes and cases for the remainder of the stuff. Total spend, ?800.

Electrical PAT Testing.
Again, this is probably another area where the unscrupulous event photographer will save a few quid. they won't bother getting their kit tested. We want to ensure the absolute safety of ourselves, our staff and our customers. This is an annual task and cost us around ?150.

Wages.
This is probably a dirty word, but we all have to eat! We encounter a fair few people who think we are profiteering from their pastime and that we should be doing it for the love of it In an ideal world, this would be great. Unfortunately I've a mortgage to pay, food to buy, a because to insure, bills to pay and retirement to plan for. So have those that work for me.

Account's fee.
Because we are a reputable, above-board company we have to ensure that our books are accurate. Since I am a photographer and not an accountant, I have to hire a professional to do this for me. It would be rather hypocritical of me to complain about 'non-professional' event photographers tackling jobs and then do exactly the same thing myself when it comes to accountancy! My bill is about ?400 per year.

Taxman.
Need I say more? The taxman always gets his slice - never nice, but it has to be paid. Again, this is where the "less-than-honest" event photographer probably saves some cash as they never tell the taxman about the income.

Travel Expenses.
All of this kit is heavy and needs to be lugged around the country to get to the event. Most of the time we tug a trailer behind the car which is hardly the most fuel efficient method. Currently, when I fill the tank on the car, it costs me around ?80 - which is good for 300 miles which equates to shower per mile for fuel alone - not taking into account tax, insurance, wear & tear, tyres, servicing and so on.

Website costs.
In the current times it just isn't possible to survive in business without a web presence. Even a simple site, capable of hosting photos, will cost upwards of ?100 (and that is really on the cheap!)

So there we go. Total spend so far ?14340. That's 1434 prints at ?10 each that need to be sold, just to cover the costs. In reality it is far more than that since the figures don't include the cost of the media, the mounts, the paper bags and so on. That figure doesn't include anything towards paying for our experience which is something that no one can pick up overnight. We are not born knowing how to photograph horses show-jumping, dog agility, dressage, how to build a set, light people, people - these are all things that we have to learn: things that take time. Again, this is something that has to be paid for.

So my retort to the "license to print money" statement is simple: "yes sir, we do." "And for the ?30, 000 it has cost us for that license, I'll gladly sell it to you!"

Good quality Hay will be an alternative when you start to reduce the amount of energy-rich food, offsetting the rate of sugar in the grass. It might be good idea to add some calming supplements, such as the magic of the NAF, food if you have a spooky horse or nervous.

The horses of Erath County - the County of Texas ain't Horsin around

The Horses Of Erath County- This Texas County Ain't Horsin' Around

When Texas seceded from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War, the new Confederate government now faced the task of participating in the war while still defending the Texas frontier from Indian attacks.

The Confederates actually tried several methods for maintaining order on the frontier. Their final attempt to deal with the Indian menace was the Frontier Organization, established in 1864, a militia of able-bodied male citizens who lived in frontier counties and were not otherwise serving the Confederate cause. The militia was purely defensive and had neither the manpower nor the leadership to mount offensives against marauding Indians. By 1864, the Indians were conducting large raids against forts and settlements all along the frontier.

The Ellison Springs Indian Fight was typical of frontier engagements during the Civil War. On August 8, 1864, a small force of about a dozen troopers intercepted about thirty Indians carrying blankets and bridles for the horses they were planning to steal from the whites. The Indians easily repelled the soldiers, killing three of them, and went on to steal fifty horses near, where else... Stephenville!

FOR TEXANS, THIS ISN'T HORSEPLAY

Though the possibility of Indian raids in Texas today is highly improbable, the number of horses that can be found in and around Stephenville, the county seat of Erath County, is steadily climbing.

Texas is recognized throughout the world as horse country. There are nearly one and a quarter million equines in Texas and we lead the nation in registered American Quarter Horses, Appaloosa's, American Paint Horses and American Miniature Horses. We're second only to California in Arabians. We have over twice as many American Quarter horses as #2 Oklahoma and over one and a half as many American Paints as California, second in that department. Fully 15% of the entire nation's 6.9 million equines reside in Texas.

Want more? Major breed associations headquartered in Texas include the American Quarter Horse association, the National Cutting Horse Association, the American Miniature Horse Association, and the American Paint Horse Association. More national level horse shows are held in Texas than in any other state. Texas is home to five race tracks, three of which are very new Class 1 tracks.

Jan Anderson raises and shows Tennessee Walking Horses in Stephenville, says, "... there is a lot going on here with the horse industry...." Jan mentioned a Stephenville family by the name of Feltner who have raised a World Grand Champion Tennessee Walker and another, which has produced 6 world and reserve world champions. "I don't think Stephenville, the City of Champions, is aware that we have championship Walking Horses right here in town. On Monday, we are headed back to the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration to compete on a national level and will be back Sept. 7th. This is one of the biggest horse shows the nation has, with thousands of entries and an attendance of approximately 35,000 people each evening for 10 days."

ECONOMIC HORSE POWER!

According to The Economic Impact of the Horse Industry in the United States, a study done by Barents Group, LLC for the American Horse Council, including recreation, showing, racing and other segments, the Texas Horse Industry Delivers $5.2 Billion dollars a year to the Texas economy. What's more, the industry involves more than 7 million participants and includes nearly 2 million horse owners. As a whole, the industry has an annual impact on the U.S. economy of $112 billion and supports 1.4 million full-time jobs with approximately $1.9 million paid in taxes at each level. The median income of Texas horse-owning families is around $60,000 with 38% of households earning under $50,000 and 21% over $100,000.

Here are a few notable facts about the Texas horse industry, according to a Texas A&M equine study:

*Horseowners have nearly $15 billion invested in barns, towing vehicles, trailers, tack and related equipment and spend over $2 billion annually just to maintain their horses.

*In showing and racing alone, over 300,000 owners, family members and volunteers spend over $3 billion annually attending competitive events with over a quarter of a million horses.

*Annual cash receipts for horses bought and sold exceeds $400 million and are over twice the combined total for hogs, sheep and lambs and nearly twice the total receipts of Texas wheat.

*Over a quarter of a million households have billions invested in horses and horse-related equipment. Travel with Texas horses creates well over $3 billion in travel-related spending. The competitions and shows have a greater direct effect on the economic impact than horse racing as well as the recreational use of horses.

The Texas horse industry contributes $3 billion in direct economic impact to the state's economy and generates close to $110 million in annual taxes according to the AHC study. The study also revealed that the industry supports over 96,000 Texas jobs . This study is the most comprehensive research document ever compiled on the American horse industry and highlights 15 breakout states, including Texas, that account for more than 51% of the U.S. horse population. In terms of total effect on the gross domestic product, California leads the way at $6.97 billion a year, followed by Texas at $5.23 billion and Florida at $5.15 billion.

The AHC study was commissioned by the American Horse Council Foundation with major funding support from the American Quarter Horse Association, The Jockey Club, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and Breeders' Cup Limited, Keenland Association, American Paint Horse Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, U.S. Trotting Association, Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and the U.S. Equestrian Federation. It confirms what folks in the Texas horse industry already knew, that this industry is a vital contributor to our state's economy. Rob Werstler with the Texas Quarter Horse Association said, "Never before has the impact of our industry been so dramatically demonstrated."

Key industry statistics and economic indicators in the report included:

* Total economic impact of $5.2 billion by activity:

* $848 million from Racing

* $1.9 billion from Showing

* $1.5 billion from Recreation

* $898 million from other activities

* Estimated number of horses in Texas: 979,000

* Estimated number of horses by activity:

* 104,000 in Racing

* 311,000 in Showing

* 340,400 in Recreation

* 222,600 in other activities

"This study paints a positive picture for our industry...," said Dave Hooper, Executive Director of the Texas Thoroughbred Association .

ADDING TO AN ALREADY "STABLE" LOCAL ECONOMY

According to retired Erath County Extension Agent, Joe Pope, the Horse Industry in Erath County alone brings in over $7.6 MILLION dollars in ag-related income each year. Sales, training, boarding, breeding, shows, winnings, job creation, investments in barns and acreage...it all adds up and lots of money is changing hands as a result. Pope said, "The Stephenville Cattle Company does over $1-Million in horse sales annually." There are an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 horses in Erath County.

Kathy Hawke of the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce adds, "Many people who visit The Chamber are looking specifically for information related to our Horse Industry...Most of the time, it's parents wanting riding lessons for their kids but we get many inquiries regarding stalls as well." She said that The Chamber has a rodeo packet which is distributed at rodeo events and it contains western stores, tack, ferriers, veterinarians, etc., and added, "the participants at these rodeo events have informed us of how grateful they are that The Chamber, as well as the promoters and the arenas themselves, care enough to cater to this need when they get to town." Hawke added that her own uncle owns cutting horses in here in Texas while living and working a China-based corporation.

It all adds up to an industry with a multi-billion dollar impact on the economy that has a significant impact on the lives of many Texans, including those in and around Stephenville. Joe Bob Huddleston, Chairman of the Stephenville Chamber's Agricultural Committee, says, "The horse industry has been apart of this community for a long time and because of its continued growth in our area, it now has some very deep roots that have made a significant impact on our local economy. Every year, thousands of visitors visit our community participating and attending various events related to the horse industry. With all this momentum, I foresee only continued growth as folks continue to visit, and move, to Erath County."

JUST GOOD PROMOTIONAL HORSE SENSE

When people see emerging trends, they tend to sit up and take notice. According to Pope, Stephenville is home to some very world renown horse trainers as well, including Kobie Wood and Scot Jackson. With such international notoriety, these people wind up serving as local ambassadors for our region, bringing attention to what's happening locally and ultimately doing their share to boost the local economy. Pope added that several of the county's dairies have recently been converted into horse stalls and acreage.

This kind of attention cannot be overlooked from a marketing perspective. The wise local business should take a look at the large dollar amounts being generated by the local Horse Industry and do all they can to get in front of that market through sponsorship. I don't know where the notion comes from that there's a 'Horse Dollar' or a 'Livestock Dollar' or even an investment or entertainment dollar. Fact is, there's just ONE dollar and we're all competing for it. People who love horses also eat food, pump gas, wear clothes and stay in hotels so, the audience is right there, seated in rows. Businesses should be pursuing these equine markets for the ever-increasing number of eyes that will be staring at their brand. There's a particular soft drink that was so dominant as a sponsor at the 2004 Olympics, you may not be allowed in if you're sipping another beverage. That same attitude should belong to local businesses as well and the local Horse Industry is providing the audience.

HIGH ON HORSES

Stephenville, Texas just loves horses. They are simply a part of the local fabric around these parts. From My Friend Flicka, to Black Beauty, Silver to Mr. Ed, humankind has always had a special relationship with its equine friend. As John Jeremiah Sullivan writes in his eloquent treatise of the history of men and horses: "A person today who knows horses, really knows them, understands more about what it meant in the past to be human than the most knowledgeable historian."

It's common knowledge that horses make important contributions to the livelihood and well-being of people. According to a Report on the Texas Horse Industry, produced by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, over half of the respondents to the question posed regarding their reasons for horse ownership identified "quality of life" and "relaxation/stress management" among the main reasons for their involvement with horses. Half the respondents identified physical fitness as a reason for their involvement.

The Equine Science program at Tarleton State University in Stephenville occasionally receives donations of horses which will be used in the University's breeding program and provide students with the opportunity for hands-on education in equine reproduction.

One such donation came from Jerome Hogan of Hico and Bernie Koerner of Stephenville. There were nine horses included in the recent donations and the foals from these mares will be used in future training programs. Dr. Don Henneke, Director of Tarleton's Equine Science program, said the donation of well-bred mares from around the state enhances the University's equine program and allows students the opportunity to work with quality animals.

"The support of people like Jerome and Bernie helps insure that our students will have good horses to work with in the future," said Dr. Henneke.

Stephenville, Texas bills itself as the Cowboy Capital of the World and, being the #1-ranked dairy producing county in the state, where there are cows, there's gotta be Cowboys. Where there are Cowboys, there must be horses. The 50,000 square foot Lone Star Arena hosts many horse-related events each year including the Flying Bella Rosa, Dal-Worth Appaloosa Horseshow, National Reined Cow Horse Competition, Best Horseman in the World and more.

NOT TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE BUT...

Well, there you have it. The Horse Industry in Stephenville, Texas and surrounding area is alive and kickin'. But what about the rest of the nation?

Personally, my lone experience with a horse as a boy in Illinois was quite anti-climatic. The ol' sway-backed mare wandered over to the water trough and drank forever while I sat on her back, crying (Oh, I should mention I was about 6 years old at the time; a city boy from Chicago whose only experiences with animals were the Bears, the Bulls and the Cubs).

Throughout American history, there were few moments outside the home that were not shared between people and horses. One might say that we've been... stuck like glue! Horses provided us with transport, accompanied us into battle, and they were indispensable partners down on the farm, especially when agriculture accounted for the vast majority of economic output.

Even when they weren't actually present, horses were rarely far from man's consciousness. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the streets of America's fast-growing cities were littered with piles of steaming horse manure as each urbanized animal produced up to 35 pounds a day. The average streetcar horse lived just 4 years and was often quite abused. Slipping on wet cobblestones could cause severe injury.

An injured or dead 1300 pound animal can cause quite a traffic jam. New York removed 15,000 dead horses from city streets in 1880 and Chicago carted away 9,202 as late as 1916.

Although not as serious a problem as manure and carcass removal, noise pollution was a constant annoyance. Benjamin Franklin complained of the "thundering of coaches, chariots, chaises, wagons, drays and the whole fraternity of noise" which assailed the ears of Philadelphians. Boston and New York both passed noise ordinances banning traffic from certain streets to buffer hospitals and legislative chambers. In 1866, the Atlantic Monthly described Broadway as clogged with "dead horses and vehicular entanglements," and in that year the mistreatment of the urban horse led to the establishment of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. As late as the 1890s, one journalist noted that the sounds of traffic on busy New York streets made conversation nearly impossible.

Piles of pony poop and expired equines proved to be a fertile breeding ground for flies. The spread of infectious diseases were a much greater concern than odors and noise. By the turn of the century public health officials had largely accepted the bacterial theory of disease and had identified the fly as the main culprit. Street sweeping was now a major urban expense. It became increasingly obvious that the most effective way to eliminate the "typhoid fly" was to eliminate the horse.

NECESSITY: Mother of Invention

For all its supposed sophistication, life in the burgeoning city was a smelly, noisy breeding ground for life-threatening disease. I, myself, actually lived in a horse-filled Amish town called Bremen, Indiana for several years in the early 60's. Buggies full of rosie-cheeked Amish children were everywhere and, trust me, horse pollution can be a very real concern around town.

For obvious reasons, the arrival of "the horseless carriage" was quite welcomed by many city-dwellers in the early 1900's. The coming of the automobile dealt another large blow to the horse. A number of articles in popular periodicals repeated the argument by a writer in Munsey's Magazine that "the horse has become unprofitable. He is too costly to buy and too costly to keep."

Despite their incomparable dependability, it was society as a whole that was now saying "neigh" to the working class horse. But the horse did not disappear from the city scene overnight. It was more of a function-by-function phase-out. While horse-powered machines remained a manufacturing necessity until about 1850, they were largely replaced by other energy sources within a decade. The next duty of the urban horse to disappear was that of pulling streetcars. Their demise was very rapid, as between 1888 and 1892 almost every street railway in the U.S. was electrified.

In 1906, city buses replaced horse-drawn buses on Fifth Avenue, New York City. In 1912, New York, London, and Paris traffic counts all showed more cars than horses for the first time. By 1907, many professionals, including urban doctors, were doing business by way of the horseless carriage. Motorized cabs became commonplace around the same time. The drop in Model T prices that followed after Henry Ford opened the first assembly line plant in 1913, led to the massive adoption of cars by commuters.

Ford had introduced the $600 Model N in 1906. Deluged with orders, afterward, Ford was able to make deliveries of a hundred cars a day. Encouraged by the success of the Model N, Ford was determined to build an even better "car for the great multitude." In 1908, the Model T sold for $825. The Model T Runabout sold for $575. By the time the Model T was withdrawn from production in 1927, its price had been reduced to $290 for the coupe, 15 million units had been sold, mass personal "automobility" had become a reality and the era of the horse was, for all intents and purposes, gone.

Although the industrialized world has dispensed with horses for daily work and transport, our nation's history and culture are more bound to the horse than to any other animal. Today, for many, the horse lives only on the margins of human society.

Not so in Erath County, Texas. Though horses seemingly have no more room to roam, what animal standing alone in a field has the unique ability to rekindle such age-old affections that lie deep within the breast of most city-dwellers?

Only a horse, of course.

As Joe Pope said about owning horses, with a knowing smile on his face, "It's romantic. Purely romantic."

Stimulation the Humana Foundation of growth in private Initiatives, creativity and charity

Humana Foundation's Stimulation of Growth in Private Initiatives, Creativity and Charity

The Humana Foundation established in 1981 as the philanthropic arm of Humana Inc., one of the U.S.A.'s leading health benefits companies in Louisville, supports and nurtures charitable activities that promote healthy lives and healthy communities in the belief that improved health and education provide the greatest opportunities for individual and societal growth. They have thus placed confidence in people and their capacity to change for the better. They recognize the power of technology and immediately useful information to effect change. Humana believes in effective, passionate, capable and innovative leaders believing that through them wonderful things can happen. Humana also embraces health as a balanced state of well-being, recognizing an interrelationship between mind, body and spirit. These three represent vital ways through which communities could be renewed as outlined below:

Mind - projects or educational institutions that promote academic achievement and improvement in education.(31%)

Body - projects or human service agencies engaged in the promotion of healthy bodies and healthy lifestyles(41%)

Spirit - projects or civic and cultural development organizations that seek to inspire communities and enliven the spirit.(28%)

The Humana Foundation supports organizations that improve the quality of life in the communities where Humana has a meaningful presence. Humana and The Humana Foundation made 420 grants to nonprofit organizations in its headquarter's city of Louisville and other communities where the company has a meaningful presence in 2006 with attention given to the three priority areas outlined above according to the percentages in brackets. Total contributions in 2006 came up to $7.8 million.

Humana and The Foundation make a difference through volunteerism, health education, funding for the arts, educational scholarships, disaster relief, and more.

The Humana Foundation donates millions of dollars each year to non-profit organizations in the markets where it does business. Following the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it pledged $1 million for disaster relief in the Gulf Coast region

o The Foundation immediately donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross with an additional $500,000 set aside for long-term recovery efforts.

o The Foundation also matched employee gifts that totaled $300,000.

o With the employee match, the total Humana response was $1.6 million for Katrina Relief.

In partnership with four other Foundations,it distributed funding to a number of agencies with the primary focus of rebuilding the health services infrastructure and reducing reliance upon emergency rooms as a source of primary care.

David Jones Sr., former CEO and chair of the board of directors is leading the City of Parks initiative in Louisville to acquire land to expand parks throughout Louisville. He raised over $20 million for this effort in 2005 and 2006 through his personal fundraising efforts. In February 2005, the Trust for Public Land and Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson announced a $20 million initiative spearheaded by the community fundraising efforts of Humana Co-founder and Chairman Emeritus David A. Jones. The funds will be used for continued land purchases that will transform Metro Louisville to a "City of Parks." to which The Humana Foundation contributed $1.25 million.

Hundreds of school children at Rockdale Paideia Academy celebrated the Cincinnati launch of T.A.T.U. - Teens Against Tobacco Use - a program made possible in Cincinnati through a partnership between the American Lung Association and ChoiceCare/Humana. During the kickoff event, students symbolically extinguished the world's tallest cigarette (50') by deflating it, making it collapse in seconds. Also featured were former Cincinnati Bengal Mike Martin, a performance by the Ropin' Rockets (jump-rope team) and a dramatic skit and rap song carrying anti-tobacco messages.

T.A.T.U. developed by the American Lung Association as part of its Smoke-Free Class of 2000.is funded in nine major cities by the Humana Foundation. Tthe T.A.T.U. program - under the American Lung Association and Humana Foundation partnership. T.A.T.U. uses a "kids helping kids" approach to teach elementary school children about the dangers of tobacco use. First, adult volunteers are trained to work with teenagers. The teens, in turn, will teach younger students the truth about tobacco and how children are often targeted with sophisticated marketing campaigns by tobacco companies. Research shows that teens are eager to talk to younger children while this younger age group respects and listens to teens.

Humana is thus becoming more involved in volunteer activities. This process of developing and refining volunteerism, it hopes, will benefit associates and enrich leadership at Humana as well as impact communities across the U.S.A.

They participated in United Way's Day of Caring and worked on a Habitat for Humanity house constructed by Humana associates.

The Humana Foundation has chosen Libraries for the Future to partner in the Foundation's new signature project. The Wellness Information Zone Project takes a "high tech, high touch" approach to helping the public find essential and reliable health information. Features include trained librarians, a new health information Website, Wellness Information Centers in public libraries and nonprofit organizations, and Humana associates volunteering as Wellness Information Guides.

The Humana Foundation's $750,000 challenge grant to Louisville's Metro United Way (MUW) campaign created excitement for reaching the community fund-raising goal with additional enthusiasm resulting from the innovative leadership of CEO Mike McCallister as community chair of the 2006 MUW campaign. The campaign reached its goal of $30 million which was to be distributed to about 160 nonprofit agencies in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Foundation staff worked with MUW leadership to distribute $60,000 in "impact grants" in 2006. Allocation of funds focused upon projects that provide services for area senior citizens. ElderServe, GuardiaCare, New Directions Housing, Legal Aid Society, Jewish Family and Vocational Services were amongst those who received grants as part of this worthwhile program:

In April 2006, The Humana Foundation pledged $500,000 to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center's Wendell Cherry Institute for Clinical Trials in memory of Humana's co-founder. The Commonwealth of Kentucky Research Challenge Trust Fund (also known as Bucks for Brains) is matching the gift for a total contribution of $1 million to create The Humana Foundation Professorship in Clinical Trial Research. Humana's Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus David A. Jones and his wife also donated $1 million to the Cherry Institute for Clinical Trials.

Organizations in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana received grants, including the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge. With its funding, the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is providing early-detection screenings to underserved areas in Southeast Louisiana, including FEMA trailer villages.

o Tampa - The Centre for Women received $100,000 to build a suite to train individuals in basic construction skills for the nonprofit's Senior Home Improvement Program. Tampa became the fifth city to participate in Humana's Our Community Benefits Program in 2006.

o Houston - SIRE, Houston's Therapeutic Equestrian Center, improves the quality of life for people with disabilities using horseback riding and related activities.

o Michigan - Crossroads of Michigan, the winner in the Detroit market, is equipping and furnishing a Sunday Soup Kitchen at its new location.

o Chicago - City-Wide Tax Assistance Program (TAP) enables the working poor to claim tax credits and refunds as well as overcome barriers to mainstream financial resources.

o Atlanta - Trees Atlanta is establishing an urban forestry program to help create programs and exhibits for a new environmental education center.

The Humana Foundation is also engaged in promoting art and culture. A steady and constant area for support is the annual Humana Festival of New American Plays. This partnership with Actors Theatre of Louisville which began its signature sponsorship of the annual Humana Festival of New American Plays in 1979 is the longest partnership between a corporation and a theater in the United States which in 2006 celebrated its 30th anniversary. The Business Committee for the Arts then honored Humana on November 8, 2006, in New York City . Humana has provided the festival with more than $16.4 million since it started. From thgen it quickly rose to an annual site of pilgrimage where more than 20,000 theatre lovers from around the world converge every year to see new plays from emerging and established playwrights and get the first look at the future of the American theater. Over 300 Humana Festival plays have been produced, representing the work of 206 playwrights. More than 90 million people worldwide have seen additional productions of the many plays originated in the Humana Festival. Film audiences have seen Humana plays adapted for the screen.

The Humana Foundation has received much recognition for such outstanding work.:

- two national awards for its support of the Humana Festival of New American Plays

-and the Humana Romanian Assistance Project.for Humana's long-term commitment to the arts, especially

so the annual Humana Festival of New American Plays

The Council on Foundations, a Washington, D.C.-based membership organization of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations, gave it its "Critical Impact Award" for the foundation's efforts to transform Romania's health care system through the Romanian Assistance Project.. Humana and Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, Texas, provide funding and management for the project, which began in 1990 when former President George H. W. Bush asked American businesses to assist the newly emerging democracies of Eastern Europe, which had been damaged by Communism.

The project offers training programs for Romanian medical professionals and donates equipment, supplies and technical literature. The University of Louisville's Division of International Pediatrics is an outgrowth of this. The division received a $4 million boost in April 2006. Two $1 million donations, one from The Humana Foundation and another from David and Betty Jones, attracted equal funding from Kentucky's Bucks for Brains program. The Foundation gift will create a program endowment, while the gift from the Jones is developing a new endowed chair for the division. In September 2006, David Jones published The Dacian Chronicles: Transforming the Romanian Health System, 1990-2006. The Foundation distributed copies to hundreds of Romanian Assistance Project volunteers and participants at celebrations in Romania and Louisville, Kentucky.

The Humana Foundation has also been chosen as recipient of the 2007 Corporate Funder Award from the Theatre Communications Group, a New York City-based organization that works to promote nonprofit American theater.

Things to consider when you choose Horse Riding hats

The riding is a sport very appreciated by many people, both in the United States and the United Kingdom, or even other European countries. From beginner to the professional class, all have the same risk in a horse, i.e. the fatal injuries. Safety of riding equipment are a must for those who want security. Horse and rider safety

Horse and Rider Safety

There is no beating around the bush - horse riding is a risk sport. Apart from the obvious dangers of falling off when mounted, these large animals have always got to be treated with respect when handling them on the ground and in the stable.

Riding need not be any more dangerous than any other risk sport, as long as certain precautions such as those listed on this page are followed. Horse Rider Safety should always be borne in mind when riding or near horses.

Safety for Visitors on the Yard

Horses are large prey animals and have been designed through evolution to protect themselves from things they do not understand! Anyone standing behind them is in danger of being kicked. Horses characters can vary greatly - some can bite (either if they are in a bad mood, or if they genuinely believe the hand reaching out to stroke their nose is actually a carrot!) Visitors to a Riding Stables or Livery Yard, especially with young children, are asked to remember this, and keep their children under control at all times! Riding stables are not playgrounds, and children running round corners unexpectedly can cause a horse to rear.

Riding Hats

Riding hats or helmets MUST be worn at all times when riding, and are paramount to horse rider safety. They are also advised to be worn at other times when handling horses. Riding hats come in various designs - some designs suit one shape of head better than another, and of course some designs are more appropriate to your favoured riding discipline.

The most important thing about a riding hat is that it much be fitted correctly ideally by someone who had attending a hat fitting course. It must also conform to standards PAS 015 or EN 1384. Hats cannot prevent serious injury in all circumstances, but help in the majority of cases. Your skull is fragile - it is not worth taking a risk with.

If the hat suffers a severe impact, either as a result of a fall or a drop onto a hard surface it MUST be replaced. Riding hat prices start from around the mid £30s, and you can spend up to over £100.

Hats do not last forever as the protective padding gradually compresses with use, and the hat becomes looser on your head. You should purchase a replacement hat as soon as this happens.

Riding Hats and the Law

It is a legal requirement that children under the age of 14 MUST wear a riding hat which conforms to the appropriate standard when riding a horse on the road.

Body Protectors

Horse rider safety can be helped by a body protector which can give protection to the chest and back area if you fall from your horse. These are particularly useful if you fall onto a hard surface (such as a jump), or if your horse stands on you after a fall. Body protectors can help prevent serious injury.

There are three standards of protection, and each has a different coloured label in the shops to identify the level of protection offered.

Level 1 Black label

Protectors providing a lower level of protection that is only considered
appropriate for licences jockeys.

Level 2 Brown label

Protectors providing a lower than normal level of protection that is only
considered appropriate for use in low risk situations. These DO NOT include riding on roads or other hard surfaces, riding over jumps, riding young or excitable horses, or riding while still inexperienced.

Level 3 Purple label

Protectors providing a level of protection that is considered appropriate for normal horse riding, competitions and for working with horses. Protectors to this level should:
Prevent minor bruising that would have produced stiffness and pain.
Reduce significant soft tissue injuries to the level of bruising.
Prevent a limited number of rib fractures.

When first using a body protector it will feel very strange and restrictive. Most protectors mould to your body's shape, and do so more easily in warm weather than in cold. Although the body protector feels uncomfortable at first you really must persevere with wearing it. After a few times of wearing it when riding you will find you feel naked without it, and it will become second nature to put it on and use it every time you ride.

Body protectors cost from £60 up - a good investment for something that may save your life!

Body Protector Fit

Fitting is of paramount importance and a visit to a properly trained retailer is recommended, for example anyone displaying the BETA Safety course attendance certificate.

Ensure that you are wearing the correct size of body protector and that it is adjusted to give a close fit to the torso, and that no RED VELCRO is exposed at the shoulder or waist closures. If RED VELCRO is visible the protector is too small or is incorrectly fastened.

The body protector should be tried on over light clothing. Check that is comfortable to wear in all simulated riding positions. The garment should fit securely and reasonably tightly to avoid movement during activity and to ensure that it is in place in the event of an accident.

Footwear

It is essential that you ride in appropriate footwear. Serious injuries can be caused if you fall off and your foot gets stuck in the stirrup. Proper riding boots are recommended - these have a heel to stop your feet sliding through the stirrups. Boots can be short (jophur boots) or full length. The most comfortable footwear is often short boots and half chaps - chaps keep the stirrup leathers from chaffing and bruising your legs. However, what you choose to wear is personal choice and how much you can afford (long leather riding boots can set you back around £100 up).

It is not appropriate to ride in trainers as they have no heel and can be dangerous.

Safe Tack

You are now equipped with riding hat and body protector, and proper footwear. Now it is time to turn to your horse!

The object of riding and of horse rider safety is to stay on top of your horse - your riding apparel may help protect you if you fall off, but really you want to avoid doing this at all costs! You do not want to part company with your horse due to faulty tack!

Tack needs to be checked regularly so you can spot a problem before it occurs.

Leather tack needs to be kept clean and well conditioned so that it remains supple - stitching needs to be checked to ensure there are no points of weaknesss. Buying quality tack in the first place is essential. You may find bridles costing little more than £20, and wonder why you should pay over £100 for the similar item. However, the more expensive bridle is undoubtably going to be made of better leather, and with good care will last you longer and be more reliable. The last thing you would want is for your reins to break when your horse is in mid gallop!

Tack can be repaired, but don't skimp here. If it is in bad condition, replace it! If your girth breaks you will fall off your horse and may suffer serious injury - is it really worth risking it?

Buy the right tack for your riding discipline. Also make sure the tack fits your horse properly for the comfort of both of you.

Finally it is good if you can develop a relationship with your tack supplier - for example, having the person who provides your saddle come out and check the fit regularly. They will be able to advise you on things that you may have missed.

Visibility on the Road

Wearing hi viz protective clothing when riding on the road can make you more visible to a car driver approximately 3 seconds earlier than would otherwise be the case. These seconds could be vital in saving the lives of you and your horse.

It is not always in poor or dark conditions that hi viz equipment is necessary - on a bright summers day the driver's vision may be hampered by bright sunlight!

Slogans on tabards, such as 'Pass wide and slow' also help remind drivers of the need to take care when passing horses. Unfortunately too many drivers nowadays seem unaware that horses cannot be depended upon in the same way as bicycles, and often come far too close and too fast.

Equestrian Road safety also includes thanking drivers who show consideration for horses and their riders - this encourages them to be as thoughtful in future. Sometimes riders do not help themselves if they ignore couteous behaviour! A simple 'thank you' can go a long way - so remember every time!

At any time in your horse riding career you may part company with your mount when you least expect it (or less politely get dumped!). Being prepared can help you get back into the saddle as quickly as possible, with little or no serious damage!
Horses weight half a ton or more - they must be respected!

Horse boarding stables - milestones for a Happy horse

Horse boarding stables - milestones for a Happy horse

When searching through the different boarding stables autour, it can become a little intimidating trying to understand which one would be best to not only your horse, but to your needs as well. There are many places that offer good business to ride on a horse, but of course the question in mind would be if the facility offers the appropriate equipment and sufficient roaming free space for the horse of happiness and good health.

One of the things most important that horses would need get great exercise is an area large enough to run, play and interact with the other horses. Check the amount of room available for horses, keeping also in mind the number of horses are boarded in this particular stable. If there are too many horses in a small area, most, if not all horses experience stress which may begin to touch physically and emotionally. Horses is very social and athletic creatures who need opportunities to learn and grow with the other horses, all also go out to explore the area.

Another something very important to look at is the stables themselves. Make sure that the stables are well structured and in good condition, with a good dose of room for horses to stay in. Just as important as the fields of exercise, stables must be large enough to keep the horse relaxed and give them a sense of security without being too restrictive. Verify the equipment in and around the stables to see their State as well. If everything seems to be well kept and regularly verified and cleaned, shows general care given to care for the horses.

Advice for the purchase of real property in the Costa Del Sol in 2010

Advice For Buying Real Estate in the Costa Del Sol in 2010

If you are in the market for a main or second home in sunny Andalusia, this is a good time to buy. Plenty has already been said about the 'market discount', the price correction that logically followed the general and property market-specific recession. An additional boon, if you buy in euros from a British seller, is that you could also benefit from a currency discount. When it was introduced to the general public nine years ago, the euro was worth about ?0.6, so it is quite dramatic that its value now hovers just under sterling, at ?0.9. One implication is that British property sellers in Spain wanting to convert back their money to pounds can afford to lower their prices even further than the property market has dictated, making finding a British seller a particularly attractive option.

Independently of these conditions, the big question is what kind of properties are on offer and exactly where. This article is a brief roundup, travelling from east to west, of some of the main areas on the Costa del Sol, each of which present specific advantages and characteristics. You can click on the hyperlinks to find more detailed information about each area. In terms of property types, there is a vast choice of apartments, townhouses, and penthouses in luxury urbanizaciones (gated complexes), ranging in price from ?200,000 to over a million euros. Period homes which can be village town homes or detached, either restored or not, range from ?200,000 to several million. There are also new or recently built luxury villas, many of them in golf and/or gated communities, that can cost up to several million euros.

Most of the above properties types are available in the various principal areas of the Costa del Sol. You'll never be far from a golf course, the sea, or a variety of sporting facilities, but the relative importance to your family, guests, and yourself of any or several of these particular amenities may help determine which area or areas you focus on during your search.

The eastern Costa del Sol, including Torremolinos, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalm?dena, Calahonda, and other areas offer all types of apartments, some of them at quite attractive prices. These resorts are somewhat less exclusive than Sotogrande or those around the Marbella area, but they are also places that provide a lot of local colour. Of particular note is Mijas, up in the hills about 10 kms from Fuengirola. This typical Andalusian white mountain village has managed to retain its original look and has famously been the residence of foreign artists and bohemian types ever since the sixties, about the time when Marbella was being discovered by the world's jet-set. Today, the village is still home to a large foreign population that seems to get on alright with the locals. Hospital Costa del Sol, a large city-like facility, is also located in this area, catering to residents all the way to Estepona and Manilva.

Marbella can be divided in four areas: Central Marbella, East Marbella, Puerto Ban?s, and Nueva Andalus?a. Central Marbella has the great advantage of having a charming historic quarter, a truly Spanish feel, and easy beach access. Here you can combine the pleasures of a cultural life -by taking advantage of the exhibitions and concerts taking place all year long-and leisure living, with the greatest concentration of restaurants and shops on the Costa del Sol. Marbella's Spanish population is particularly ubiquitous and influential, so it's easy to get to know locals here. Adjacent Puerto Ban?s, which can be thought of as the marina of Marbella, has a similar cachet and offers some of the same advantages. It is home to a greater proportion of foreigners, however, and one of its key attractions is of course the pleasure harbour, frequented by some of the world's largest private yachts.

Luxury department stores, outstanding dining facilities, and a multiplex cinema are all located at or walking distance from the harbour. You might choose to invest in a property at Puerto Ban?s because it is relatively less crowded than Marbella itself, with long-established luxury complexes offering large green spaces. If you want even more space and quicker access to a variety of golf courses, consider properties in Marbella East or Nueva Andaluc?a. The former, which mainly consists of the residential complexes and golf courses, has a reputation for being quiet, and offers a small marina that you might find more accessible and convenient if you have a small boat than Puerto Ban?s. Last but not least, Nueva Andaluc?a is the elevated area just northwest of Puerto Ban?s, on the other side of the N340. The area was thusly named because its homes have been purposefully built in a way reminiscent of traditional Andalusian architecture, with overtones of Roman and Moorish styles. Living here one feels more remote from Marbella, as if the place were a town of its own, complete with an international school and other learning establishments for the children. Nueva Andalusia has a bullring, extensive shopping facilities, and a wide selection of international restaurants. Last but not least, its elevated position means that the local golf courses provide challenging playing terrain and that the views to the Strait of Gibraltar and Africa are outstanding.

The next important place in the western direction is San Pedro de Alc?ntara, which has peldan?a legal status, which means that although it is a part of Marbella municipality, it enjoys a town hall of its own with limited jurisdiction over local affairs. San Pedro is the starting point of the road to Ronda, on which some important golf resorts are found such as the world-renowned La Zagaleta, an exclusive golf and residential domain famous for its sloping hills and mansions. Further up the road is the Ascari race track, a sports car owners' country club where the rich and famous including none other than groovy speed fan Jamiroquai can legally push their cars' engines to the performance they were designed for. On the coast, San Pedro offers residences on both sides of the N340 road, with the beach-side residences forming nice neighbourhoods of private villas and gated communities that are a close walk away from the beach. The N340 road has seriously stressed the town centre with excessive traffic but this will end within a couple of years as the underpass is completed and a green area built atop. San Pedro has several long-established golf courses as well as other attractive amenities, such as schools, shopping facilities, an exhibition centre, and many restaurants. It also features Roman and Paleo-Christian ruins, as can also be found in Manilva and parts of Estepona. On a modern culture note, San Pedro is also home to Ganjazz, an outstanding band blending hip hop, funk, and Cuban sounds, by far and away the Costa del Sol's best young musical act.

Moving on westward, we find the much less densely populated area of Estepona, Casares, and Manilva, two towns that have grown tremendously over the last six years. Estepona, a fishing town now equipped with a marina, has experienced the most dramatic changes. It features a nice old town with quite a Spanish flavour, an landscaped and newly refurbished seaside promenade, and a golf club of its own. Estepona was quite a compact town some years ago but has expanded dramatically in all directions. The town is dominated by a 1,450-meter high mountain called Sierra Bermeja (Terracotta Mountain) behind which is a network of valleys, white villages, and streams to capture anyone's imagination (one highlight being the blossoming almond trees in February-March). On a clear day, from the top of the mountain the view in all directions is impressive: you can see Sierra Nevada, Gibraltar, Africa, and more. The mountain is spectacular during the few winter days that it becomes snow-capped, usually in December or January, and it is one of the last places to see the pinsapo, or Spanish fir, a Christmas-tree like pine that was widespread all over Europe some 20 million years ago. Estepona is a good place to find an apartment in the town itself, but it also has a number of gated communities. Rural properties are available in the campo (countryside), as the gently sloping foothills of the Sierra are referred to, and there are some new villas on the road leading up to the top of the mountain, all with the wonderful views one might expect.

Next in the western direction is the municipality of Casares, which is divided in two population centres. The old village is situated up in the hills amidst beautiful groves of cork oak and other trees, and a newer part of the town is by the sea, so this is a great place to get either a rural or seaside property. The larger town of Manilva also has both a section up in the hills and one by the sea, the latter being much newer and having expanded rapidly over the last decades. Here, the construction of large complexes is still underway and the small downtown area recently was made more pedestrian-friendly when an underpass was built for the N340. One of the greatest attractions of Manilva are its Roman ruins such as those seen in the Manilva river at Ba?os de la Hedionda, where one can still bathe in sulphurous water inside the Roman structure built to that effect. The rest of the river valley makes a great hike, with cascades and pools for further bathing. Next to Manilva is Puerto de la Duquesa, which features a marina, the main golf club in the area, and a number of residential complexes.

Last but not least is the resort-town of Sotogrande, with its six golf courses, polo grounds, stately homes, world-class hotels, equestrian centre, international school, beaches, marina, and new developments. As we describe at length in the separate article, the resort of Sotogrande was built in the sixties and from the start equipped with American-grade infrastructures, which means it has always enjoyed wide roads and that its old neighbourhoods are typical of upscale neighbourhoods in the US, with individual villas featuring large mature gardens. Many of the older homes are owned by Spanish people from Madrid, but there is also a large foreign population. If for no other reason, Sotogrande has acquired fame due to Valderrama, the masterfully designed, challenging, and stunningly beautiful golf course that hosts championships as important for the sport as the Volvo Masters. The most significant news with regard to Sotogrande has been the recently completed construction of five residential islands offering private moorings for residents' boats as well as underground parking.
