Most parents are lucky to have healthy children. However, there are also those whose children have special needs. Where it goes, if you are one of these parents, therapy?
Many families have found a wonderful place called the J.F. Shea therapeutic riding Center in San Juan Capistrano in California. It is one of the most respected and largest accredited therapeutic equestrian programs in the country.
Must be more than 200 volunteers, physical and occupational therapists, a staff to take care of 25 horses and seven acres of land to take care of more than 540 riders per year, according to Executive Director Dana Butler-Moburg and his assistant Dana Green. Green added that the centre serves clients with approximately 50 variant of a disability.
Why raising the Centre of Shea butter in relation to a small, but exclusive part of Laguna Hills, California? Because some Centre devoted more than volunteers and supporters live right in the city!
When and how everything started? Twenty years ago, Jon and Penny Fosheim wanted to volunteer and was the Centre looking for someone with a background in finance to assist in its growth. With the financial context of Jon and Penny interest in horses, the union was made.
Penny calls kismet. Jon was involved while Penny was raising their children. It is during these years that Penny has met with other moms Nellie Gail. She has recruited these families to form what Moburg and Green were nicknamed "The Lone Pine circle Gang". Over the years, the Nellie Gail pals literally raised millions of dollars in support of the Centre of Shea.
Other families that have joined the fold are Jenny and Bill Klein, who donated $ 1 million and a challenge grant of $850,000 to cover the costs of final renovation last year. The grant has been reached on December 31, 2007, and Shea has broken fair ground on the family education of Klein and the strengthening of the therapy.
Others are the and Ellen Thomas - is the former President of Shea Homes in Southern California; Susie and Bob roof - former Presidents of the organization. Georgia Redoglia, Bev Yocum, Diane and Wayne Blackburn and Dixie Sparks, which is voluntary, 2008 the Centre of the year.
What kind of support give these families - in addition to financial donations? Penny oversees fundraising annual barbeque and a black tie event properly named the Shea Center Gala. The ladies present themselves as bees "worker".
All agreed that they do whatever needs to be done - to raise funds, price of chance, bind bows and ribbons on the balloons and decorate the rooms. As Jenny Klein said "a synergy has developed among us in our years of friendship." Mothering and volunteering
Thus, all their children are involved. Many of the adults now still donating their time or were found in their own passions for volunteering for a way to follow in their footsteps very generous of parents.
A daughter finished college and decided to teach in Madagascar. Some spend their summers in the home of the College of volunteering in the Division of administration at Shea or the head of the pig racing fundraiser.
Are there special stories or memories that emerge their 20 years "kidney"?
Susie Roof-who is also a licensed physiotherapist, said she sees things from a medical point of view.
"I see only be able to take a child with serious medical needs up to a certain point the traditional medicine and then doctors send the child with the parent and it is essentially everything," said. "With the Centre of Shea, therapy is ever cut." We have seen clients such as Michael Lewis, who was Shea since its creation, 30 years ago still attend and get something of the program. »
Ellen Thomas has noted that many children have brothers and sisters who play soccer, baseball and other sports in need all the games.
"Children who come to the Shea Center will never get to go and do these things," said Thomas, "but here, they can and compete in the riding of competitions and their brothers and sisters are with those and encourage their!" "They also have the chance to win medals and trophies.
This group started with Jon and Penny Fosheim here in Laguna Hills, but their spirit of generosity and community was quite contagious to spread too many of their friends and neighbors.
